South Bend Farmers Market Cafe

Stopped by the South Bend Farmers Market to pick up some spices for my chili seasoning and figured I'd grab a cup of tea at the SBFM Cafe while I was there. That was the plan anyway. Then I remembered the Hungarian mushroom soup. Well, hell. You can't expect me to just walk past that. Rich, creamy, full of mushroom goodness. Absolutely worth getting sidetracked for. I came for tea and spices, but the soup was the highlight of the trip. No regrets.

After a little walk around the farmers market I had to stop at the South Bend Farmers Market Cafe for hot chocolate with sprinkles and most importantly their crazy Hungarian Mushroom soup, and a grilled cheese with pickles on it. It's harder to get a grilled cheese with pickles on it than you may think...but they got it down here!!

South Bend Farmers Market Cafe Jen and I headed to the South Bend Farmers Market to buy strawberries for a little Fourth of July strawberry shortcake. That was the mission. Somewhere between Produce and Pastry, breakfast launched an unauthorized coup. As we walked into the Farmers Market Cafe, we discovered Jen's uncle, nephew, two brothers, and sister in law already sitting there. Breakfast for two suddenly became breakfast for seven. Life does that. The Farmers Market itself is one of those places that still feels stubbornly local. You can smell coffee, fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, produce, and hear about six conversations happening at once. Somewhere a baby is fascinated by blueberries. Somewhere else an old farmer is explaining tomatoes to someone who has never met a tomato outside a grocery store. The cafe sits right in the middle of all that organized commotion like the eye of a breakfast hurricane. Jen and I recently made an important scientific discovery. At breakfast, soup can be an appetizer. This should not be controversial. Before breakfast, we ordered a cup of Hungarian Mushroom Soup and a cup of Watermelon Gazpacho. The mushroom soup is rich enough to make you question whether you should just cancel the rest of breakfast. Creamy. Earthy. Packed with big chunky mushrooms. The Watermelon Gazpacho couldn't have been more different if it tried. Cold. Bright. Refreshing. Like summer liquefied, chilled, and served in a cup. The restaurant is absolutely humming. Not loud. Not chaotic. Just alive. The wait staff move like they've developed some kind of breakfast hive mind. One is clearing plates before you realize you're finished. Another magically appears with coffee. Somebody else is wiping down a table before the next family has even decided to sit there. There's no panic. No bottlenecks. No one standing around looking confused. Every single person seemed to know exactly what was needed next. For breakfast I ordered the Country Benedict. This is not health food. It's a biscuit, topped with a sausage patty, topped with an over medium egg, covered in sausage gravy. In engineering circles this is known as a structural load test. It's basically dry flour, protein, protein, all buried beneath wet flour with little chunks of additional protein mixed in for morale. I regret nothing. I ordered the hash browns crispy. Restaurants hear "crispy" the same way kids hear "clean your room." They acknowledge the request and then do whatever they were already planning. Not here. These hash browns arrived with enough crunch it was like a potato bird's nest. a sparrow might consider nesting in them. Exactly what I wanted. Jen ordered the Half and Half... biscuits and gravy with hash browns. Looking at our plates, I'm fairly convinced we ordered the same breakfast plated from two different philosophical viewpoints. Different employees stopped by to see how everything was. Not drive by "everything good?" checks. Real ones. The kind where they actually stop long enough to hear the answer. I told every one of them the same thing. "It's exactly what I wanted." About halfway through breakfast, a woman walked over. "Are you Bruce?" Now... if you've spent enough time on the internet, that's either about to be really good or really awkward. Instead she smiled. "I'm Nicole. I just wanted to wish you and Jen a happy anniversary... and happy belated birthdays." Well... damn. That got me. She didn't have to do that. She wasn't taking our order. She wasn't delivering food. She just took a minute out of a packed Saturday morning because she remembered us. There's a difference between recognizing a customer and recognizing a person. One is service. The other is community. The only thing they actually did wrong all morning? They forgot to charge me for the Watermelon Gazpacho. Absolutely not!! Not on my watch! I flagged the server down and sent her back to fix the bill. I'm not about to write a review of a local business while accidentally stealing soup. They earned it. We paid it. Then we wandered back into the market to buy the strawberries we'd originally come for. Sometimes that's what local places are supposed to do. You go in for fruit. You accidentally have breakfast. You unexpectedly have breakfast with family. You leave feeling like you just spent time inside your community instead of simply buying food. That's a hell of a way to start a holiday weekend.
