Steve N Lauren’s Kitchenette was our inaugural GastroMob Way back in January. It's good grub and it is reasonably priced. They supported us early on lets return the favor. It's worth the drive and the lakeside view isn't half bad.

I walked into Steve N Lauren’s Kitchenette knowing this could go one of two ways. Either this worked, or I was about to feel and look foolish in front of real people, in a real room, with real food on the line. No clever post was going to save it. If this didn’t land, it failed publicly. Getting in sets the tone. You walk through the private club first, smoky in the way older, small lakeside clubs just are. Dim lights, bar regular energy, exactly what you’d expect. You check in and place your order right at the kitchen, pay up front, then step into the dining room. The air clears and the food becomes the focus. The dining area itself wasn’t smoky at all, just a clean, functional room built for eating and talking. I think a karaoke machine in the corner. 6:30 and the deep fryers were earning their keep, the night eased itself open with fried mushrooms and mozzarella sticks. Logical starters. Crowd warmers. The kind of food that quietly says relax, you’re in good hands. The mushrooms fried were good appetizers , but the mushrooms and gravy for the sliders. Chefs kiss. They were dark and glossy, sauced just enough to cling. The mozzarella sticks came out hot, breading intact, cheese ready for the pull test. Passed Rhythm set in. Food didn’t all hit at once. It came out in waves. Small batches. intentional, almost like casual courses, without any ceremony. Refilled consistently. Someone from the kitchen would pop out and say what was coming next. Philly cheesesteak. Sliders. Chicken wraps followed. Warm tortillas, well-seasoned chicken, and cucumber set it off. Cold, crisp, bright. It cut through everything fried and rich and reset your mouth in a way side salads only dream about. Chicken tenders came next, actually tender, with craggy breading that told you these weren’t freezer monstrosities. At first I thought there were no sauces. That was on me. They had all the usual suspects.Ketchup, mustard, ranch, honey mustard, BBQ, Cholula, Frank’s. A fully respectable sauce lineup. The chicken Philly landed solid. Soft roll, properly chopped meat, savory without tipping into grease. The kind of sandwich you keep eating without realizing till it's gone..damn, that was fast. Then the sliders. Small, beefy, melty-cheese situations with seasoned beef and soft buns. That mushroom gravy to add. They disappeared fast, which tells you everything you need to know. French fries showed like punctuation. Not trying to steal the show, just finishing the sentence. Quick note on the pierogi so nobody gets confused. They weren’t part of the buffet, they were an add-on, and they were huge. One is plenty. Two is a full meal with a little left over for breakfast regrets. A pierogi purist may balk at the size and especially the deep-fried approach, looking at you Sandy Moskwinski but my taste buds and my stomach didn’t care one bit. Golden on the outside, soft inside, and deeply satisfying. There were about twenty or so people. Honestly I lost track. Some I know well. Some I only knew from online. Some I met for the first time tonight. I didn’t get to talk to everyone, but I talked to mostly everyone. The room felt easy. Comfortable. No edge. No weird energy. People of all colors, genders, incomes, and politics sharing tables without effort. The staff was attentive without hovering. Despite being inside a private club, it never felt like we were intruding. No awkwardness. No territorial vibe. Just a space doing what spaces are supposed to do. I ate more than ten dollars worth of food. Easily. No bloated regret. No oil slick settling in. Normally this style and volume of food comes with consequences. Tonight it didn’t. I felt full, satiated. I didn’t feel greasy. I asked around. Favorites ran the gamut. That’s a good sign. It means the kitchen isn’t leaning on one hero item to carry the night. By 7:30 most of us had eaten our fill and drifted out naturally. No rush. No linger-for-the-sake-of-it energy. Just people heading home content. I also got something unexpected out of it. Real conversations with people I hadn’t met before. Not comments. Not reactions. Actual face-to-face exchanges. The thing worked! For a first Gastro Mob, it worked. Our host was exceptional and treated us well. The pacing was smart, the food was steady, and nobody left hungry or annoyed. If you were there, take a minute and leave a review. Say what you liked. Say what you didn’t. That’s the deal. Thank you to everyone who showed up and helped make the first Gastro Mob real. This one’s in the books. The next Gastro Mob is in February.
